BREEDER REFERRAL
Please Read the following before deciding to get a Saint Bernard
The Middle Atlantic Saint Bernard Club provides a breeder referral
service for those visitors interested in obtaining a Saint Bernard. We would ask you
to read through the following points before proceeding as Saint Bernards are not the
breed for everyone.
1) Consider if you have the time and money to devote to the care, grooming and
training of a dog, keeping in mind that giant breeds such as Saints tend to have higher
Vet expenses.
2) Saints are dogs that like to be close to their people. They should not be left to
themselves either inside or out without attention.
3) Saint Bernards Drool - some more than others. When the head shakes the ceiling
is not out of range. There is no such thing as a 'dry mouth' Saint, and you should
be wary of any breeder who says otherwise.
4) Saint Bernards Shed. The coat is shed twice a year but some shedding is to be
expected year round. Spending 15 minutes a day with your dog and a comb or brush
will remove most of the loose hair, and create a bond between you and the dog.
If you are one to insist on a fastidious home, Saint Bernards are probably the
wrong breed for you.
5) Saint Bernards are cute as puppies as are all dogs, but puppies grow.
A well bred Saint will usually average about 180 lbs for males, females around 140.
In short, within two years time you will have a dog that may be as large or larger
than yourself. EARLY TRAINING is essential! You MUST teach your dog how to behave
in the first 6 to 9 months. Nothing is more rewarding than well behaved companion,
and nothing is more frustrating than having a dog which will not behave and is too
large for you to control. For this reason many Saints end up in rescue simply because
they 'got too big'.
If you've made it this far and think that Saints are the breed for you, or if you
need more information, contact one of the breeders listed. They are members of this
Club as well as the Saint Bernard Club of America, and strive to produce the best
quality Saint Bernards. All will be happy to speak to you and assist you in getting
a Saint Bernard. If the breeder you contact does not have puppies available they can
refer you to a responsible breeder who does.
